Working on elevators for the big bucks eh? I don't no why really, I suppose it could be it's technical aspect, it's probably environmentally uncomfortable at any given time, it could be that you could fall X stories at any moment assuming you're not working with it on it at the ground floor, that the word el-e-va-tor has 4 syllables in it or that people utterly hate stairs.
